Ideas for helping your child master sight words
- Post the words in various places throughout your home. For example: post a word behind the toilet. Every time they use the restroom, they will see the word. They must spell it and say it before they go. Even the exposure of seeing it will be helpful. Other possible places to post: over the door handle, on the refrigerator, walls, toy chest, etc.
- Keep the word cards you are making beside your child’s bed and have your child read them each night before going to sleep.
- Post the list on the car dash. Have your child read them as you drive. Say the words in a sentence, say, spell, say.
- Look for the words in books, magazines (while in waiting rooms), newspapers.
- Make a collage by cutting our the words from newspapers, magazines and gluing onto a piece of paper.
- Get physical! Make up motions to each letter of a word. Example: for the word the: t=jump,h=hop with legs open, e=arms up.
- Make a tune for your list. Example: jeopardy tune. Don't forget the mix up the words because we do not check them in any order. We want them to learn them not memorize them.
